Audit of Accredited Probation Programmes 2003

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Probation (HMIP) conduct periodic audits into the quality of the delivery of accredited probation programmes throughout England and Wales. The 2003 round of audits is available on the Home Office website.

The programmes fall into four main types and are assessed against criteria in four categories:

Programme Types

Assessment Categories

  • Think First

  • One-to-One (Priestley)

  • Reasoning & Rehabilitation

  • Enhanced Thinking Skills

  • Committed Leadership

  • Programme Management Responsibilities

  • Quality Of Programme Delivery

  • Case Management Responsibilities

For each of these categories, success criteria are marked as either fully met, mostly met, or not met. By totalling up scores against these criteria, HMIP generate an Implementation Quality Rating for the scheme.

These audits can be helpful in assessing what makes a successful project, and in determining what the common success (and failure) points in these projects are.
