Crime Reduction - Helping to Reduce Crime in Your Area

Neighbourhood Wardens

New Neighbourhood and Street Warden Schemes

In April 2001, the Prime Minister identified measures that would improve the quality of life of people throughout England and Wales. He announced a £50 million street warden scheme to build upon the success of the Neighbourhood Wardens Programme originally launched in September 2000, which now funds 85 schemes throughout the country.

Over 700 new neighbourhood wardens will hit the streets in the spring providing a friendly face in areas throughout the country, with the primary aim of helping to stamp out neighbourhood nuisances such as graffiti, abandoned cars and litter, all of which can seriously reduce people’s quality of life.

Tailored to meet the needs of the local community, the role of street wardens will vary according to local requirements. They are expected to

  • improve the physical appearance of streets and open spaces

  • deter anti-social behaviour

  • reduce low-level crime and the fear of crime

  • encourage communities to work together to improve local environments

Wardens and warden managers will be trained in partnership with the Home Office and ‘regional champions’. These are existing neighbourhood warden schemes who will be charged with sharing their skills and best practice throughout the regions.
