The Victim's Charter
| This document is published for archival/historical purposes. It will not be updated. |
The 1996 Victim’s Charter sets out the 27 standards of service that victims or their families can expect from the criminal justice agencies. It also explains how they can complain if the standards are not met.
The Charter represents a commitment by the Government and the criminal justice agencies to address the needs and expectations of victims. The Government and the agencies in turn can expect to be judged against the results.
Victims can expect:
a crime they have reported to be investigated and to receive information about what happens;
the chance to explain how the crime has affected them, and their interests to be taken into account;
if they have to go to court as a witness, to be treated with respect and sensitivity;
to be offered emotional and practical support.
