Risk Profile: Overview
The purpose of presenting this background information on risk is to help partners
to:
identify specific crime problems in their own locality
gain initial clues as to the broader dimensions of the problems (in terms of
who gets victimised etc)
spot local patterns which do not conform to the national picture (and which
may need especially innovatory responses) and
prioritise.
Whatever the case, these ‘typical’ patterns of risk must be supplemented by and
checked against local information Assessing the local situation in Developing
Local Solutions
The 2001
British Crime Survey suggests that in car owning households in
2000:
-
10.9% experienced some form of vehicle theft
-
1.8% experienced the theft of a vehicle
-
6.8% experienced a theft from a vehicle
-
3.1% experienced an attempted theft
These figures mask significant variations in the places, times, type of vehicle
and people most at risk. Identifying the local variations is essential in developing
targeted responses.
