Increasing awareness
Awareness needs to be raised regarding:
- what trafficking is;
- the scale of the problem;
- the nature of the exploitation victims suffer;
- the characteristics of the victims;
- the characteristics of the traffickers and exploiters;
- how the problem is being addressed locally; and
- who should be contacted if there is suspicion of trafficking.
This awareness and understanding needs to be developed to varying
appropriate levels amongst three distinct groups:
- the key agencies responsible for tackling trafficking and supporting
its victims (police,
the immigration
service, CPS, social services, NGOs with
specific support services to offer);
- any other agencies who are likely to come across trafficked victims
(including local
authorities, the Health and Safety Executive, refugee organisations, women’s refuge organisations, HIV
and drug service providers, health service providers);
- the general public (who may include clients of victims being sexually
exploited or people with contacts in local communities where children
may be hidden or victims may be held while in transit).
