Applying Unit Costs to Crime Figures

  1. Select one or more types of crime and take recorded crime figures for previous year.

  2. Not all crime is recorded, therefore it will be necessary to ascertain the ‘true’ rates of crime. A multiplier could be applied to recorded crime rates. A multiplier could be derived from the British Crime Survey by looking at the disparity between rates of crime reported in the BCS, compared to national recorded figures. However, although the British Crime Survey is a more reliable indicator of the ‘true’ rates of crime, than recorded crime figures, there are some types where it is not accurate (e.g. domestic violence).

  3. Apply data on costs of crime drawn from national research such as recent Home Office work to estimate cost of different types of crime to the adjusted local crime figures.
