What can be done to help LGBTTs manage and reduce their fear?

  • Adopt a zero tolerance approach to all hate / discriminatory behaviour. This applies both to investigating homophobic hate crimes and to improving attitudes within the criminal justice agencies when dealing with lesbians and gays.
  • Introduce more third party reporting through community representatives. As well as building trust within the LGBTT community, these representatives could provide information to the police about local crime trends, for example street robbery offences outside gay bars were mobile phones are being stolen.
  • Promote examples of good police / LGBTT co-operation in reducing fear and crime. But expose and tackle poor examples. Again, it’s a matter of keeping the LGBTT community informed about the changes and improvements that are being made within the CJS to effectively meet the needs of witnesses. Once more members of the LGBTT community have a positive experience of the CJS, more people will be willing to report crimes.
