Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transsexual and Transgender (LGBTT)

What factors can contribute to LGBTTs’ fear of crime?

Homophobia

Abuse, discrimination and name calling – these so-called ‘minor’ incidents can have a major effect on the peace of mind lesbians and gays, and cause them to be fearful of being singled out for physical abuse or attack solely because of their sexual orientation.

Distrust of the police and other criminal justice agencies

Members of LGBTT communities may be reluctant to report crimes to the police because they are concerned about being judged. There is concern that the police and others may see them as being responsible for their own problems, view them as being less worthy of support, and even ‘out’ them, for example if they are bisexual and married where the partner isn’t aware or gay/lesbian, or where they do not know want their employers or family to know.

What can be done to help LGBTTs manage and reduce their fear?
