Why are people fearful?

The above question would be the logical starting point for any discussion about fear of crime. Once some of the drivers for people’s fears have been identified, we can find ways to help them overcome their fears.

As the below diagram shows, depending on people’s situations such as low income or living in an inner city area, they are more likely to have a higher fear of crime.  The next sections look at some of these areas and suggest some interventions to help reduce the fear of crime.
