Low crime, higher
fear (Constituency for Fear of Crime)
The likelihood of becoming a
victim of crime is lower than the fear of crime so people’s
lives are unnecessarily affected by fear of crime. These areas
constitute our main target audience. In these areas a coherent
fear of crime strategy could have a real impact on the public
views and perceptions about their local neighbourhood, meaning
the fear of crime will significantly reduce and the quality of
life improve.
Examples of this type of area could be a rural community and
any areas that are adjacent to those with high crime, e.g. the
outer suburbs of London. This scenario shows that fear of
crime is partially independent of crime (e.g. in some
circumstances the fear/risk paradox shows that people at least
risk of crime are more fearful of it).
