Methods and techniques for identifying hotspots: overview

A number of methods and techniques exist for mapping crime and identifying hotspots. Different methods produce different results, with some being more suitable than others for improving partnership understanding of crime and disorder patterns. The hotspot map that is generated should be easy to understand and practical to apply. The central message from a map being,

  • where are the hotspots?

  • can particular areas be prioritised for attention? (e.g. to places that are ‘hotter’ than others).
