Not in My Neighbourhood Week 2008

Not in My Neighbourhood Week 2008 has been deemed a huge success This year local partners from every region across England and Wales ran activities to show case the work that is being done to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. These activities brought professionals and local communities together to say no to crime in our neighbourhoods.

Aims of Not in My Neighbourhood Week

The key objective of the week is to inform local people of the action that is being taken in their area to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and to make their communities safer with the aim of:

  • increasing public confidence in their local crime reduction partnership and police,
  • to encourage the public to play their part, and
  • provide reassurance to residents.

The week provides an excellent opportunity for local partners, including CDRPs, local police and residents associations to demonstrate the work that is being done to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and substance misuse in their area. Weeks of action like Not in My Neighbourhood can bring public and professionals closer together to provide greater knowledge, greater empowerment, and greater reassurance.

National activity

To launch the week the Home Secretary visited Henbury, Bristol to reinforce the message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and Vernon Coaker, Minister for Policing visited the Rushcliffe area of Nottinghamshire to launch a local Positive Futures Programme.

The Tenants Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) also organised 6 community engagement events across England and Wales which saw approximately 300 people attend to meet with local crime fighting professionals and discuss the issues that matter most to them.

The Home Office also produced a Not in My Neighbourhood Week 2008 handbook which provided regions with key messages to tailor for local use and practical advice

In addition regions were supported by the COI News and PR who helped local agencies generate a huge amount of positive media coverage.
