Racially Motivated Crime
Research in Progress
Research being carried out by Home Office Research Development and Statistics Directorate (RDS) supports the development of race relations policies across the Home Office focusing in particular on criminal justice issues, racial harassment and violence, and race equality issues in general.
Current Projects
-
Evaluation of provisions for racially aggravated offences This will assess the impact of new government legislation to deal with the problem of racist violence and harassment as part of the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act. It will use surveys and case studies focusing on the Police, Crown Prosecution Service and the Courts to explore the way the legislation is being used and whether there is any need for further guidance.
-
Religious discrimination. This project aims to assess the evidence of religious discrimination within England and Wales, both actual and perceived, and to identify available policy options for dealing with it. The research involves a wide range of sources, including existing literature, local area case studies, and surveys. Further information on this project can be found at http://www.multifaithnet.org/
-
Young offenders from different ethnic backgrounds This research explores similarities and differences in the experiences of young offenders from different ethnic groups using qualitative interviews. It focuses both on the origins and nature of offending behaviour and offenders' experiences of the criminal justice system and presents ideas for policies to address the needs of ethnic minorities.
