Partnership Support Programme: briefing papers

This document is published for archival/historical purposes. It will not be updated.

The following briefings have been published under the Partnership Support Programme funded by the Home Office and delivered by Crime Concern and NACRO. The programme offers a range of support services including health checks, briefings and regional training and development seminars.

Involving your community

This briefing has been written to help everyone working in the field of community safety with the consultation process. It gives reasons why crime and disorder reduction partnerships should consult and involve their local communities, using its structure to chart the progress from community consultation to community involvement.

Communities that are fully involved in the planning and implementation of their local crime and disorder reduction strategy become strong communities that have an impact on the safety of the community.

The guide sets out a systematic approach to community involvement, including a discussion of the range of possible methods for community consultation and their advantages and disadvantages. It gives a description of the long term processes that lead to sustained community involvement as well as a sample strategy for community involvement.

Working Together Better

This briefing covers issues of collaboration and responsibility in the local authority areas of England and Wales. With more than one local authority providing services of some kind in its area, and functions that impact on community safety spread across all authorities, there is a requirement for joined-up government.

This guide explains the powers and duties of the various local authorities and their inter-authority responsibilities under the Crime & Disorder Act 1998. It lists reasons why working together makes sense, giving help in how to get started, work better and avoid duplication. Two appendices give more information on the non-metropolitan county councils and the parish and community councils.
