Traffic calming: The reality of “road rage”

This document is published for archival/historical purposes. It will not be updated.

An analysis on 1996 newspaper reports that arguments data presented in the 1998 British Crime Survey. It looks at the behaviour reported, the consequences and the outcomes of 352 incidents. It also looks at the age and the gender of the aggressors in these incidents. The report concludes that newspaper reports of this type of crime can be unreliable and focus on those events that the media perceive as being “news-worthy” and that the courts are making serious attempts to deal with the more serious and violent incidents. It recommends that reports of road rage are put in the context of other violent crime in the local area, and that road traffic measures should continue to address those aspects of the driving experience that are inherently frustrating.
