Violent crime against children and young people - keynote speech

Sally Dowler, Milly's Fund and Sharon Doughty, Missdorothy.com
Sharon Doughty shared her personal experiences as a child in a violent situation and explained the work she has been doing with children and young people in the field of personal safety and crime prevention. Her focus is the education programme designed to give children the tools to protect themselves from bullying and abuse, using a cartoon character called Miss Dorothy Com, or Dot Com. The programme fits the curriculum and combines lessons with an interactive website and a drama piece created with the National Youth Theatre. Sharon explained how some areas were using the resource and handed over to Sally Dowler to tell delegates about the "Watch Over Me" programme that they had both worked on.

Sally Dowler explained why they had created Milly's Fund after their daughter's body was found and how the fund aims to promote personal safety for children and young people. She shows how they went about this aim, how they worked in partnership with other agencies, and what is different about the "Watch Over Me" approach. Clips from the video and the Milly's Fund website were shown to illustrate this approach for teenagers, and there has already been some feedback received.
