£1.2million for alleygating schemes
Spaces such as communal walkways and pathways, children's play areas, and alleyways behind houses that have been out of bounds for residents will be given make-overs to make them safer, cleaner and more attractive thanks to a £1.2 million cash boost announced by the Government in August 2005. The funding is part of Operation Gate-It, which aims to deliver physical environmental improvements to areas which are run-down, badly designed or poorly maintained and have become magnets for anti-social behaviour.
88 projects will benefit from this second round funding. Seventy seven new projects will each receive a grant of £10,000 and a further 11 projects from the first year of Gate-It will be awarded flagship grants of £40,000. These projects are listed below. Alley-gating is one of several measures introduced in recent years to help design out crime by reducing access to crime targets and by making it harder for offenders to use back-alley warrens to escape capture.
Since February 2003 local authorities have been able to apply to close back passages that were being used to facilitate crime under new powers introduced by the Government. By September of that year 72 areas were covered by these powers.
Operation Gate-It is part of the TOGETHER campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour. It is managed by the environmental charity Groundwork UK and delivered in partnership with BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), and is now in its second year. Gate-It aims to regenerate and empower communities across England and Wales to design out crime and opportunities for joy-riding, burglary, assault, intimidation, vandalism and graffiti by installing gates, fencing, lighting, bollards and CCTV.
