New Guidance for Dance Clubs

The London Drug Policy Forum (LDPF) exists to help co-ordinate London local authority policy and practice and to encourage joint working. The LDPF, working with a range of partners, including the Home Office, have published guidance for the clubbing and night-time economy sector. The guidance has been produced in recognition of the significant changes that have occurred in the clubbing and night-time environment in recent years, including licensing hours, alcohol licensing and smoking legislation. In addition, there have been changes to the patterns of the use of recreational drugs. This has highlighted fresh challenges to those involved and working in the nightlife environment, and there is therefore a need for new approaches to tackle these challenges.

The guidance is intended for local partnerships, managers and owners of clubs and other licensed premises, local authorities and anyone working within the nightlife environment. It is organised around eight chapters:

  • Drink, drugs and dance – providing the context for current levels and types of drug and alcohol use in the night-time economy.
  • Creating a safe physical environment – preventing crime and disorder, and ensuring public safety
  • Tackling drug dealing – practical advice on how to minimise the dealing of drugs
  • Reducing the harm from drug use – information on specific drugs, and how to reduce the risks their use poses
  • Promoting sexual health in a late night setting – reducing negative health outcomes, providing information, and preventing sexual assault
  • Developing a drug policy
  • Professional fact sheets
  • Information and contacts.
