Crime Reduction - Helping to Reduce Crime in Your Area

Domestic Violence

Tackling Domestic Violence

Most Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) have identified domestic violence as a priority for action. This briefing note summarises recent research on effective approaches to reducing domestic violence and outlines key areas for action. Its main focus is on violence perpetrated by men against women. However, it is important not to overlook the incidents of men being victimised, either by women or same sex partners.

The note is designed to inform CDRPs in their tasks of:

  • auditing local problems

  • developing a domestic violence strategy

  • setting targets for reduction

  • sponsoring initiatives

  • monitoring progress

The sections cover:

  • the scale of domestic violence and known risk factors

  • characteristics of effective domestic violence forums

  • elements of an effective strategy

  • key areas for action in joining up responses

The paper draws on case studies and offers pointers to further information.

This briefing paper has been prepared by Helen Young, Julia Stafford and Rosie Chadwick, Crime Concern. It has been produced as part of the Partnership Support Programme (PSP), delivered by Crime Concern and Nacro in the government regions and Wales, and funded by the Home Office.
