Not In My Neighbourhood Week
15-21 October 2007
Not in my Neighbourhood week, 15 – 21 October, formed the culmination of months of hard work for crime fighting partners across the country to raise awareness of the huge amount of work taking place day in, day out to tackle crime and make communities safer. Hundreds of events and activities took place across the country which included truancy sweeps, home security checks, Streetsafe surgeries with local crime fighters, the removal of abandoned vehicles, residents meetings and Police CCTV vans targeting local hotspots. Resident-led events were held in association with the Tenants Participation Advisory Service for England and Wales and communities marked the 25th anniversary of Neighbourhood Watch.
Home Office Minister Tony McNulty visited Brent to observe action on DVD sales and the work of the community safety team, the Attorney General visited Gloucester where she observed the work being done to increase neighbourhood management and community empowerment and Yorkshire and Humber Minister, Caroline Flint, visited Doncaster where she joined forces with residents and crime fighting professionals to urge others to take pride in their local community by cracking down on litter, graffiti and flytipping.
The Home Secretary, Rt Hon Jacqui Smith appeared on ITV’s This Morning to support the week and the Guardian’s Women section of G2 ran a feature on women fighting crime which included interviews with the Home Secretary, Moira Wallace, Home Office Director General, PCSO Kath Stretton and Irene Wilson, a local resident involved in tackling crime through Neighbourhood Watch and a residents panel.
Thank you to everyone who took part!
